Battle lines form in Nevada regulation debate

Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003 | 11:21 a.m.

Nevada lawmakers will consider legislation this session that could alter competition in the telecommunications industry, giving dominant companies like Sprint Corp. greater flexibility in pricing their services, a newspaper reported.

In Business Las Vegas, a sister newspaper to the Las Vegas Sun, reported that the bill is supported by Sprint, the main local phone company in Las Vegas, and SBC Communications Inc., which operates outside of Las Vegas as Nevada Bell.

Smaller competitors XO Communications Inc. and Cox Communications Inc. are fighting the bill, saying it would allow Sprint and SBC to engage in predatory pricing and drive smaller competitors out of the Nevada market.
