Remedial classes may be dropped at universities

Monday, Feb. 3, 2003 | 9:54 a.m.

Remedial education could be phased out at the state's two universities, according to a proposal made by the university Board of Regents.

Regent Mark Alden said that having students in remedial classes at the universities was an unnecessary cost for the state.

Alden and Regent Doug Hill on Friday asked the board, which oversees higher education in Nevada, to consider pulling state funding for the remedial courses, possibly within the next two years.

The regents are scheduled to study the issue more closely in March.

About 12.6 percent of the state's freshmen enroll in remedial-level courses, according to a University and Community College System of Nevada study. About 30 percent of those who are in remedial courses graduated from high school with a B average.
