Guesss when Mojave Max will awaken at Red Rock Canyon

Mojave Max, the desert tortoise living at the Red Rock National Conservation Area, may stay underground a while longer, but Clark County officials are asking students to guess when he'll emerge.

Every spring Mojave Desert reptiles, including desert tortoises, respond to warmer weather and more daylight by emerging from their winter's sleep.

Students are encouraged to research Mojave Desert weather, temperatures and conditions to scientifically estimate when they believe Mojave Max will first emerge from his burrow in 2003.

Students can then log onto www.mojavemax.com to review contest rules and electronically enter their official guess.

The winning student and his or her class will receive prizes.
