Holiday closings

Many local entities will close early today for New Year's Eve. Some may close or be short-staffed Friday to give employees a four-day weekend. Here's what's open and closed New Year's Day, Thursday:

SAFETY: Police and fire emergency services as usual. Administrative offices closed.

UTILITIES: Closed: Nevada Power Co., Sprint, Las Vegas Valley Water District, Southwest Gas, Cox Communications cable television.

GOVERNMENT: Closed: Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City, Clark County, state, courts, federal offices, federal courthouse.

SCHOOLS: Closed, no classes: Clark County School District, University Nevada, Las Vegas, Community College of Southern Nevada. (Note: Public school classes to resume Jan. 5, classes at the university to resume Jan. 20, classes at the community college to resume on Jan. 26.)

MAIL: Closed: U.S. Postal Service, United Parcel Service. (Note: No UPS ground service deliveries on Dec. 31.)

NEWSPAPER: Sun offices closed. Sun published in combined morning editions with the Review-Journal. (Note: On Friday, Sun offices open, regular afternoon deliveries.)

TRANSIT: Downtown Transportation Center: Open; City trolleys: Not running; Citizen Area Transit: Holiday schedule (fewer buses on fixed routes). (Note: from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 p.m. Thursday, CAT bus rides are free.)

LIBRARIES: Closed: Las Vegas-Clark County District, Henderson District, North Las Vegas District, Boulder City Municipal.

GARBAGE: Republic Services of Southern Nevada pickups as usual.

MATRIMONY: Marriage License Bureau open 24 hours, starting at 8 a.m. Thursday, closing at midnight Sunday.

FINANCIAL: Closed: Brokerage firms, many banks. (Note: State law allows banks to open on holidays as long as they post transactions to the next regular business day. Check your local branch.)

PARKING: City parking metered spaces free.
