Holiday Closings
Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003 | 9:15 a.m.
New Year's Day has not always fallen on Jan. 1. Long ago, some observed New Year's Day as early as Sept. 21 (the autumn equinox) and as late as June 21 (the summer solstice). With the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1582, New Year's Day moved to Jan. 1 for most countries. Many local entities will close early on New Year's Eve, Wednesday. Some may close or be short-staffed Friday to give employees a four-day weekend. Here's what's open and closed New Year's Day, Thursday:

UTILITIES: Closed: Nevada Power Co., Sprint, Las Vegas Valley Water District, Southwest Gas, Cox Communications cable television.
