Neonopolis hosts annual blood drive

The second annual New Year's Eve Blood Drive will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Neonopolis.

The drive will offer lots of give-a-ways, and each donor will receive a Crown Theatre movie pass and choice of Jillian's VIP party, bowling, billiards or game (while supplies last), refreshments from Krispy Kreme and Muscle Beach Lemonade and special T-shirt.

Walk-ins are welcome.

Benefit to help leukemia patient

In a continuing effort to help replace the blood products used by 8-year-old leukemia patient Chrissy Nelson, the Hard Rock Hotel is hosting a replacement blood drive from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the hotel's Ballroom.

As an appreciation gift to blood donors who come out to help replace the blood and platelets used by Chrissy, a pair of tickets to the David Bowie concert will be raffled off. The winner will also receive an overnight stay and dinner at AJ's steakhouse. All donors will also receive a special edition Hard Rock T-shirt.

Local teacher given national art honor

A local teacher was selected by the National Art Education Association to receive the 2004 Nevada Art Educator of the Year award.

Ashley Forgey, who teaches at Elaine Wynn Elementary School in Las Vegas, will be presented the award at the NAEA National Convention in Denver April 16-20.

The award honors an outstanding member from each state or province association whose service and contribution to art education merits recognition and acclaim.

"This award is being given to recognize excellence in professional accomplishment and service by a dedicated art educator," said NAEA President, Mary Ann Stankiewicz. "Ms. Forgey exemplifies the highly qualified individuals active in the field of art education today."

Science, math nominees sought

The Nevada Education Department is seeking outstanding teachers to be nominated for the 2004 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

The competition will be for teachers in grades kindergarten through 6. Teachers applying for the 2004 program must be nominated. Anyone may nominate a teacher for the award, although self-nominations will not be accepted.

Teachers may be nominated to compete in either the science of mathematics category. Applications are due May 1, 2004.

To be eligible applicants must be teachers assigned to a classroom in grades kindergarten through 6 in a public or private school in Nevada, have at least five years of teaching experience in those grades, be employed full time by their school district or private school and be assigned to teach science or math in those grades at least half time during the school year or teach those grades in a self-contained classroom.

Prizes won in calendar contest

Two local residents won runner-up prizes in Unilever's 2004 National Parks Calendar Employee Photo Contest.

Alan Gines and Vicki Kannon, both of Henderson, will have their photos presented in the 2004 calendar, which features the 24 winning images from the second annual contest.

Hundreds of employees of Unilever, the consumer-goods company, submitted images taken in America's 388 national parks. The contest was judged by a panel of graphic designers and professional photographers.

The judges awarded one grand prize, a three-night, four-day trip for four to Yellowstone National Park. Unilever's National Parks 2004 calendar is available free on a limited basis by writing: Unilever National Parks 2004 Calendar, P.O. Box 13450, Charleston, SC 29412.
