Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003 | 9:07 a.m.
Fredrick Green, a Valley High School graduate who recently was promoted to chief master sergeant has achieved the highest enlisted rank possible in the Air Force.
Green, a 1978 graduate of Valley, is the son of Wynell Green of Las Vegas. His wife, Janella, is the daughter of Earl Williams of Las Vegas.
The new chief is a cantonment manager with the 820th Red Horse Civil Engineering Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base.
The career airman is also proof that successful military service is not incompatible with higher education. He is also 1999 graduate of both Langston University, Okla., and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Navy commendation
Navy Chief Petty Officer Joel Worfolk, son of Linda Carman of Las Vegas, recently received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal while assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 94, Naval Air Station, Lemoore, Calif.
Worfolk, a 1989 graduate of Western High School, earned the commendation while serving as personnel officer. According to Navy officials, his professional expertise contributed to the exceptional customer service provided to more than 1, 500 personnel assigned to 18 different commands, and his attention to detail allowed his command to maintain a pay system accuracy rate of 96 percent.
Shipboard promotions
Two Las Vegas couples are now the proud parents of new Navy chief petty officers.
Chief Petty Officer Jason Cambia, son of Valeda and Bobby Cambia of Las Vegas, was recently selected for promotion to his new rank in the U.S. Navy while assigned aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson.
Navy Chief Petty Officer Scott Kelton, son of Raymond and Barbara Kelton of Las Vegas, was also promoted to chief petty officer aboard the Vinson, home ported in Bremerton, Wash.
While serving in the ranks of petty officer first class, the two sailors became candidates for promotion to chief petty officer by passing a written exam. A selection committee, comprising other high-ranking chief petty officers and commissioned officers, then selected them from among other top candidates based upon their leadership and professional abilities.
Only top sailors who are technical experts within their job rating make it into the ranks of chief petty officer.
