Man arrested in Internet case

A 50-year-old man accused of using the Internet to attempt to lure a 14-year-old girl into a sexual encounter was arrested Tuesday by Metro Police at a Las Vegas apartment complex.

Detectives with Metro's fugitive detail had received information that Robert Lewis of Phoenix was living in the 2600 block of West Lake Mead Boulevard.

When the suspect was chatting on the Internet, he did not realize he was in contact with a Phoenix police detective, Metro Sgt. Dan Flaherty said.

Three arrested in theft from cab

Three Henderson residents have been arrested in the theft of a cabdriver's belongings and charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary and possessing stolen credit cards.

A Vegas Western taxicab driver had parked his cab at a convenience store near Boulder Highway and Tropicana Avenue about 9:45 p.m. on Dec. 16, according to the Taxicab Authority.

While in the store, the driver left his taxicab unlocked. When he returned, his personal identification and credit cards were missing.

Taxicab Authority investigators began to track the use of credit cards with the help of the driver.

The investigators arrested Dennis Wright, 28, Jesus Delacruz, 18, and Jessica Delacruz, 27, on Monday and recovered over $1,700 in stolen property, they said.

The three suspects are in the Clark County Detention Center awaiting arraignment hearings.

Not-guilty plea entered in sex case

The man who authorities allege molested two young girls at a local church pleaded not guilty to felony charges on Tuesday.

John Misseldine, 21, pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual assault with a minor under 14 and two counts of lewdness with a child under 14 before District Judge Donald Mosley.

Misseldine, of Little Rock, Ark., is out of custody after posting a $35,000 bond. He appeared in court with his attorney, Robert Draskovich.

Misseldine's trial is scheduled for Aug. 23.

Authorities say the charges stem from a May incident that occurred at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel off Christy Lane in Las Vegas.

Police say a 7-year-old girl and her 4-year-old sister told their aunt that Misseldine had inappropriately touched them while the woman had gone to adult classes at the church.

A Clark County grand jury indicted Misseldine on the charges last week. He faces 20 years to life if convicted.

Flu cases grow by 25 percent

The number of confirmed flu cases in Las Vegas has grown by more that 25 percent in less than a week, the Clark County Health District said today.

Through Tuesday, there were 126 confirmed local flu cases reported to the Health District's Office of Epidemiology compared with 99 through last Friday.

Of the confirmed influenza cases, 111 were determined through the so-called rapid tests and 15 were determined via the more sophisticated culture confirmation. Through last Friday, 88 of the confirmed cases were through the rapid test and 11 were from culture confirmation.

There has been one reported flu death in Clark County, a man who was older than 50 and in a high-risk group for potential fatal complications from the flu, the Health District said.

During the week of Dec. 8 to 13, the most recent week for which statistical information is available, 5.6 percent of patients at selected local clinics, hospitals and doctors offices had flu-like symptoms, compared to 1.4 percent for that week in 2002 and 1.4 percent for that week in 2001, the health district said.
