Letter: Ensign must help stop energy bill
Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003 | 8:51 a.m.
The flawed energy bill is currently blocked in the U.S. Senate and will stay that way unless 60 senators vote for cloture, meaning that debate on the bill would end and a vote would be taken. In the article by Sun reporter Launce Rake headlined, "Environmentalists target Ensign" (Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., who voted for cloture), the comment, "A vote for cloture is a vote for Yucca Mountain," is not at all ridiculous. Because, frankly it's true.
Also, Jon Porter and Jim Gibbons, Nevada's Republican representatives in the House, claim to have supported this bill because of all the great incentives for renewable energy it contains. Ha!
Come on folks, there is no greater promoter of the state's renewable energy resources than Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., worked hard to get great renewable provisions into the energy bill and in the end worked to stop the bill because of what an awful boondoggle it was.
The bottom line is that this is a bad bill and we need Ensign to work to stop it.
