American Greetings, the nation's biggest publicly held maker of greeting cards, earned $46.4 million, or 60 cents per share, in the quarter ended Nov. 30. That compares with earnings of $47 million, or 62 cents a share, in the same period of 2002. Sales rose to $616 million from $589 million.
The company said it had $13.8 million in costs associated with debt repurchase. Excluding those costs, the company earned 70 cents per share, matching expectations.
