Edtiorial: ‘Person of the Year’

Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003 | 8:46 a.m.

On Monday the Defense Department came out with its latest figures regarding U.S. casualties in Iraq: 463 U.S. service members killed and 2,310 injured. The casualties included the latest deaths -- two 1st Armored Division soldiers killed in Baghdad Monday by a roadside bomb.

Also Monday, Time magazine hit newsstands with the cover showing its annual "Person of the Year." The editors selected the men and women of the U.S. military. Three members of the 1st Armored Division are on the cover, representing our 1.4 million troops.

We join with Time in honoring our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines, especially those who have died or been injured. We salute those who are in Iraq and Afghanistan and other dangerous places around the world. We also salute all of those who are suited up and ready to go if called. Members of all branches of the American military, as they always have, are serving with distinction and our lives are safer for it. As we are about to enjoy the coming holidays with our friends and family members, we remember who is making this way of life possible.
