Big third period lifts Wranglers past Fresno
Eric Schneider had a three-point night and Ryan Christie put in two third-period goals to lead the Las Vegas Wranglers to a 6-3 victory Sunday against the Fresno Falcons, ending the Wranglers' six-game road losing streak.
Brent Krahn made 26 saves for the Wranglers and won his third consecutive start.
Riding a four-game winning streak, the Wranglers return home Wednesday to face the Long Beach Ice Dogs.
Schneider's power-play goal in the second period gave the Wranglers (13-5-4) a 3-1 lead, but the Falcons responded with two goals.
Christie broke the tie with two goals in the third period. His first came on a power-play assist from Jason McBain. Less than five minutes later, Mike Bain set up Christie for his second goal of the game and seventh of the season. Cam Bristow added an empty-net goal.
Indiana men win NCAA
The Indiana men's soccer team gave coach Jerry Yeagley the perfect retirement gift -- his sixth NCAA championship. The Hoosiers scored twice in a four-minute span and beat St. John's 2-1 at Columbus, Ohio.
Falcons hire McKay
The Atlanta Falcons scheduled a midday news conference reportedly to introduce Rich McKay as their new general manager. The position had been vacant for two years. McKay was released four days ago from his contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Chass to Cooperstown
Veteran New York Times baseball writer Murray Chass was elected the winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award and will be inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame next summer.
Kenyans dominate
Kenyans took six of the top seven spots, led by winner Jimmy Muinda (2:12:59) in the Honolulu Marathon. Eri Hayakawa (2:31:57) of Japan won the women's race.
Arenas hurt again
Point guard Gilbert Arenas went back on the injured list after playing just one game for the Washington Wizards since returning from an abdominal injury.
