Land sought for transit hub

The Regional Transportation Commission Thursday approved sending a letter of intent to buy an 8-acre parcel of land west of Main Street between Clark and Bridger avenues downtown.

The land is to be used for an "intermodal hub," a transit terminal that combines the Robert N. Broadbent Monorail with bus service and eventually a light rail system from Henderson.

The action taken Thursday allows staff to negotiate for the property. A purchase agreement still must be approved by the RTC.

The commission also approved naming the Las Vegas Beltway after Clark County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury. Woodbury is credited with being a driving force behind the development of the beltway, the RTC and other transportation needs.

Before the name designation can become official, however, it would have to be ratified by the Nevada Department of Transportation and Clark County.

RTC Commissioner Larry Brown, a Las Vegas City Council member, also said that the proposal should be supported through resolutions from his body and from North Las Vegas.

Woodbury was not at the RTC meeting, and RTC General Manager Jacob Snow said he brought the item forward in Woodbury's absence purposely because Woodbury is modest and initially had told Snow he opposed the idea.
