Officer suspected of drunken driving resigns

Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003 | 11:20 a.m.

A Metro Police officer cited three times on suspicion of drunken driving resigned from the department rather than face termination, officials said.

Ryan McCulloch, 25, was scheduled to appear before Metro's pre-termination board Wednesday, but Undersheriff Doug Gillespie said he resigned earlier this week.

"I met with him and he expressed to me that he was sorry he had caused embarassment to the police agency and he felt it was in the best interest of himself and the department to resign," Gillespie said.

McCulloch, a Green Valley High School graduate and Metro officer since 2000, was placed on leave in September after his third DUI in 19 months.

He was not arrested for his first offense in April 2000, but he was arrested and jailed after the next two offenses.

McCulloch has completed an alcoholism awareness program, Gillespie said.
