Letter: Improper way to criticize Bush
Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003 | 9:52 a.m.
The cartoon by Mike Smith, in the Las Vegas Sun on Dec. 4, was extremely distasteful. It depicted President Bush looking at a graph showing upward motion and saying, "Wow! These economic numbers are up." Next to the president is a gentleman posing as a foreign adviser stating, "Those are the casualty numbers."
This is deplorable! The cartoonist, as well as the newspaper, have chosen an inappropriate and vitriolic method of attack against the president. The brave soldiers and sailors who are defending our freedom from terrorists deserve better.
To imply through a cartoon that the president of the United States, whoever that may be, does not understand the cost of freedom does a disservice to all citizens. The cartoonist has a right to express his views, but you also have a right to use sound judgment in choosing what appears in your paper. I believe you did a poor job.
