Mickey Mantle's 1957 American League Most Valuable Player award, one of three MVP honors he won in his career with the New York Yankees, sold for $275,000 at an auction Monday in New York.

The MVP award was among about 300 items put up for sale by Mantle family members.

Mantle's MVP honor from 1962 fetched $250,000 at the auction in Madison Square Garden. His 1962 World Series ring sold for $140,000. His passport brought in $27,000.

Mantle's Silver Bat award for winning the AL batting title in 1956 was bought by Peter Siegel, who also paid $65,000 for Mantle's Yankees contract from 1956 and $170,000 for the Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat award from the same year.

UNLV's Henry honored

Junior forward RanDee Henry was named Mountain West Conference player of the week. She is the league's leading scorer.

Croom in Blue-Gray

UNLV's leading rusher this season, senior Larry Croom, has been selected to participate in the Blue-Gray All-Star Classic Dec. 25 at Troy, Ala.

Hull third in goals

Brett Hull passed Marcel Dionne for third place all-time in goals with his 732nd, an overtime score in the Detroit Red Wings' 3-2 victory against the visiting Los Angeles Kings.

U.S. in quarterfinals

The U.S. team advanced to a quarterfinal meeting Friday with defending champion Argentina by defeating Ivory Coast 2-0 in the FIFA World Youth Championship at Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

YankeeNets is no more

The New York Yankees and New Jersey Nets reached agreement to dissolve YankeeNets, created when the teams merged four years ago.
