School principal, architect win arts awards

CARSON CITY -- A principal of a middle school and an architect, both from Las Vegas, have been named recipients of the 24th annual Governor's Arts Awards.

Sylvia Tegano, principal of the Knudson Middle School Academy of Creative Arts, Language and Technology, and John R. Klai II will be honored at the annual arts awards dinner March 25 in Las Vegas.

They were among the five statewide winners of the award. Others were violinist Philip Ruder of Reno, silversmith Virginia McCuin of Silver Springs and artistic director Meg Glaser of the Western Folklife Center in Elko.

Tegano wrote the permanent curriculum for the standards of dance education for the Clark County School District. She also helped football players by cross-training them in dance and athletics.

Klai has supported the Lied Children's Museum, the Nevada Public Radio Endowment Campaign and other nonprofits.

The five will receive an original work of art by Sidne Teske of Tuscarora, depicting the landscape of northeastern Nevada.
