Guggenheim plans extended hours

During the holiday season, the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum at the Venetian will offer extended hours on Thursdays, through New Year's Day, and Nevada residents will also receive a 15 percent discount on all retail purchases in the museum.

Currently on display at the museum is "A Century of Painting: From Renoir to Rothko," drawn from the permanent collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in New York and features many of the museum's most beloved works.

Concerts to highlight kids' shoe drive

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District will host its ninth annual Shoes for Children holiday concerts at 1:30 p.m. and at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Summerlin Library, 1771 Inner Circle Drive and Friday at the West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd.

Led by ballet master Michael McKenzie Pratt, the lecture/demonstration offer a "hands on" exploration of "The Nutcracker Suite." The concerts feature Tchaikovsky's holiday classic performed by students of Dance Fusion, with choreographic adaptation by Micheal McKenzie Pratt, under the direction of Kathy Humphries and Tammy Eary.

The concerts will also include the West Las Vegas Arts Center Performance Dance Theatre Ensemble and musical selections by the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy Choir and the Booker Elementary School Choir.

Admission to each event is one new pair of children's athletic shoes. Donated shoes will benefit neighboring schools and any surplus will be donated to local charities. Drop-off areas for shoe donation will be available at all twelve urban branches of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District for those unable to attend the events.

Salvation Army gives coats and blankets

The Salvation Army Family Services Department will hand out coats and blankets from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. through Dec. 12 at 1581 N. Main St.

Coats and blankets will be handed out while supplies last.

People need to have a current rent receipt or utility receipt, photo ID, and a Social Security card or birth certificate for members of the household who will be receiving coats or blankets.

Trains to roll at Christmas show

The second annual Christmas Train and Craft show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Henderson Convention Center, 200 Water St.

Admission is $5; $2 for children 7-17; children 6 and under are free.

The event showcases a variety of scale model trains, including large toy trains, such as the popular American Flyer and Lionel. There will be a vendors swap meet featuring model trains and crafts. One hundred train and craft seller tables will be available, featuring centerpiece arrangements, Indian jewelry, handbags, dolls, candles, Christmas decor items, and much more.

A children's Christmas parade also is scheduled for downtown Water Street at noon, coinciding with the Train Show event.

Henderson plans annual tree lighting

The Henderson Commemorative Beautification Commission will host the city's annual tree lighting ceremony starting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Henderson Convention Center, 200 Water St. All Henderson residents are invited to attend.

Activities include a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus and a performance by the Sweet Adelines and the Robert Taylor Elementary School choir.

Mayor Jim Gibson will light the city's tree that was planted in front of the Henderson Convention Center in recognition of Arbor Day.

Following the tree lighting, the Henderson Allied Community Advocates will host an awards ceremony to recognize the winners of the city's 2003 outdoor holiday decorating contest. Awards will be presented for the top three displays as well as honorable mention.

L'Dor V'Dor

will hold its Homebound Senior Outreach/Socialization program from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Temple Beth Sholom, 10700 Havenwood Lane. L'Dor V'Dor of Temple Beth Sholom is a free, ongoing outreach program available to homebound seniors. Transportation is provided if needed.
