Letter: Separation of powers is crucial
Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 | 9:03 a.m.
Robert Bencivenga (Teachers have no budget power, Nov. 21) continues to refuse to get it.
The separation of powers doctrine is not about the heroic efforts of classroom teachers to provide an education to our children in spite of all the garbage being dumped on them by Washington, Carson City and the Ed Shack. It's not about police officers, firefighters, professors or the vast majority of government employees who do their jobs every day and just want to build a life for themselves and their families.
The separation doctrine is about that faction within the ranks of government employees who have convinced themselves they are above the rule of law. Above the Constitution.
If Mr. Bencivenga, as a government employee, is amused by the destruction of the separation doctrine that's up to him. However, I would hope that the private-sector, informed readers of the Sun, who are seeing firsthand the consequences of ignoring the foundation principle of our system of government will have a somewhat less amused response.
Get the government employees out of elected office
