Letter: Despite flooding, still a great place
Friday, Aug. 29, 2003 | 9:33 a.m.
More than 2 inches of rain fell in 20 minutes in northwest Las Vegas on Aug. 19. No one was killed, thanks, in part, to Las Vegas' well-trained rescue teams, local TV crews and neighborhood strangers who directed rescuers to people in trouble. Las Vegas really pulls together when the going gets tough.
Sure, local gas prices are outrageous, we're enduring the worst drought in decades and our streets will be torn up for another couple of years by flood-control projects. But is there a better place to live? No!
The seasonal storms clean the air. The flood-control basins do reduce flooding. The tragic consequences of the heat wave in France and the very scary blackout on the East Coast haven't happened here. Things aren't always perfect, but sometimes things work well. Sincere thanks to all who help give Las Vegas its silver lining.
