Fishing report: Bass fishing improves at Lake Mead

NEVADA DIVISION OF WILDLIFE

Striped bass fishing has been outstanding in recent days with the fish being caught on Lake Mead's surface by boaters near Boulder Beach.

One angler told the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) that stripers were "boiling" on the lake's surface early this week from Boulder Beach to the intake tower at Saddle Island. The fish ranged from 2-3 pounds and were easily caught with surface and shallow diving lures. Shore anglers have had some difficulty catching fish because they have been staying about 200 yards from shore.

NDOW creel clerks who have been working in the Overton Arm in recent days report there has been very light fishing activity and very few fish caught. Only two stripers and no largemouth bass were checked at Overton Beach over the weekend.

Game wardens are encouraging boaters to be extremely cautious over the Labor Day weekend because of problems that relate to the lake's low water level. They said that submerged rocks and other hazards are lurking just beneath the surface.

Dan Maes, NDOW installation specialist, said afternoon winds have made for difficult fishing conditions. Water temperatures are in the low 70s.
