Christoff says amended reports show flier costs
Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003 | 9:34 a.m.
Peter "Chris" Christoff, a former candidate for Las Vegas City Council, has filed amended campaign reports that he says show the dollar amounts that his former opponent, Councilwoman Janet Moncrief, paid him to send fliers attacking then-incumbent Michael McDonald.
Moncrief defeated McDonald in the runoff. Christoff supported her then, but subsequently said that he sent fliers that appeared to be from McDonald's campaign that slammed unions, and that Moncrief orchestrated the effort. Moncrief has consistently denied the allegations.
The secretary of state has called for an investigation into allegations that Moncrief violated campaign finance laws, based on Christoff's charges and previous complaints from McDonald.
Christoff deleted $4,160 from his report for the period before March 27, the amount he previously said was spent on two mailers that cited nine reasons McDonald should be defeated. He now says those were paid for by Moncrief.
He added $5,634 in donations for more mailers from Moncrief and former casino owner Bob Stupak to his March 28-May 22 report, and reported $13,640 from Moncrief and Stupak on the form he filed with the city clerk Aug. 14.
