Retailer’s profit soars

The Seattle-based clothing retailer last week reported profits of $65.9 million, or 48 cents a share, for the quarter that ended Aug. 2, compared to $36.3 million, or 27 cents a share, for the same period a year ago. Second-quarter results for 2002 included $16.1 million in charges; excluding these items, earnings were $52.4 million, or 39 cents a share.

At the end of the previous quarter, Nordstrom had forecast second-quarter earnings of 35 to 40 cents per share.

Net sales increased to $1.8 billion from $1.7 billion a year earlier.
