Teacher spots almost filled

Friday, Aug. 22, 2003 | 10:27 a.m.

The Clark County School District has nearly bridged its teacher hiring gap, with just 74 classroom positions still to be filled for the start of classes Monday, said George Ann Rice, associate superintendent of human resources.

As of this morning, the district had hired 1,307 new teachers with another 103 who said they wanted the jobs offered to them and their paperwork is being completed, Rice said. The numbers were changing "by the minute," Rice said, as additional contracts were finalized.

The district will have more than 15,000 teachers at 289 schools when the 2003-04 academic year begins, officials said.

Of the 74 classroom vacancies remaining, 20 were for elementary schools, 29 for middle schools and 35 for high schools.

The district also needs 120 specialists, in areas ranging from speech pathology to counseling and special education. Those positions will likely be filled using outside agencies.
