Letter: Middle class not on GOP’s agenda

Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003 | 8:35 a.m.

Despite the fact that the Bush administration has led this country to its worst economic status in more than 50 years, white males remain the only group that votes overwhelmingly for the Republican Party. It surely can't be for their best interest.

The only reason I can imagine why they would vote Republican is that they must think the party works against the interests of minorities, when in reality it's about class, not color.

The Republican Party platform is anti-union, pro-wealthy, pro-big corporations, and pro-employers rights. It is against practically all rights that would positively affect middle-income Americans. Unless a white male is extremely wealthy, how does he fit into the Republican Party agenda? He doesn't. His best interest lies in the same arena as any minority in his income bracket.

We must realize that the same actions that negatively affect minorities also have the same affect on a white person. The decision makers of Enron, WorldCom and other corrupt companies that decimated the employees retirement accounts were not people of color, but they are friends of the Bush administration and the Republican Party. White males should set aside their prejudices and recognize their true enemies.
