Canada employees reject union

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Employees who work for Wal-Mart in Canada have rejected efforts to unionize, the company announced Tuesday.

Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said employees in Thompson, Manitoba, rejected joining the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.

The company said results of a union vote, which took place at the Thompson Wal-Mart store on June 27, were released Tuesday by the Manitoba Labour Board.

UFCW officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Wal-Mart has stridently opposed unions in its stores, arguing that the company is structured so that employees get the best conditions by working directly with the company.
