Pride, Gonzalez make LVI
Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003 | 9:30 a.m.
Dicky Pride and Ernie Gonzalez qualified for October's Las Vegas Invitational by besting a field of 19 other pros in the Las Vegas Founders Shootout Monday at Southern Highlands Golf Club.
Pride and Gonzalez both shot scores of 7-under 65 to earn the two available spots in Las Vegas' annual five-round PGA event. Cameron Yancey narrowly missed a spot with a 66.
A number of former UNLV players competed in the 18-hole event, but none seriously contended. Charley Hoffman posted a score of 68, while Warren Schutte shot 69. Jeremy Anderson put up a 71 and Edward Fryatt shot 72. Bill Lunde carded a 73.
Ricky Barnes (68), Troy Matteson (70) and Hunter Mahan (73), three of last year's top college players, all fell short as well.
The Las Vegas Invitational takes place Oct. 6-12 at TPC at Summerlin, TPC at The Canyons, and Southern Highlands.
