Moncrief’s donations up after primary

A primary election win paid off for Las Vegas Councilwoman Janet Moncrief. Campaign finance reports filed Friday showed she raised $85,315 in the final weeks of the general election campaign.

That was almost seven times what she had on hand at the beginning of the reporting period May 23, weeks after she outpolled incumbent Michael McDonald in the April primary.

The report, the final one of the election cycle, also showed Moncrief spent $18,630. She began the filing period with $11,594 and said she had $82,278 cash on hand as of July 3.

Donations to Moncrief included $10,000 from Station Casinos; $7,500 from the Stratosphere; $5,000 each from Howard Hughes Properties Inc. and the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors; $3,000 from Todd Marshall; $2,500 each from Venetian Casino Resort LLC and Carter & Burgess, Jimmerson Hansen, P.C., and Laurich Properties, Inc.; and $2,000 each from Rebel Oil Co., Russel W. Dorn Jr. Developers of Nevada and Dollar Rent-A-Car.

The councilwoman also received $2,505 worth of in-kind contributions for fund-raising from the Walters Group.

Moncrief's largest expense since filing her May report was $8,000, which went to Zignature Printing for advertising.

McDonald raised $18,335 and spent $119,575. He began the period with $101,240, leaving him with no cash on hand.

McDonald's donations included $5,000 each from Boyd Gaming and Parkway Retail Centre and $3,000 from Al Robles.

The defeated incumbent's largest expenses were $45,000, which went to Paladin Agency for consulting, and $32,000, which went to the Culinary Union for consulting, advertising and volunteers. McDonald's campaign manager, Jim Ferrence, is senior vice president of Paladin.

Mayor

Although his challengers raised little or no money, Mayor Oscar Goodman, who won re-election in the April 8 primary, added $8,800 for the third campaign reporting period.

His top contributors included Robert R. Black, Sr., with $5,000, HIP-Nevada LLC, Wal-Mart Stores and Reagan National Advertising, a billboard company, for $1,000 each. Goodman had $227,974 on hand at the end of the third period.

Both won re-election in the April 8 primary.
