Culinary workers protest Aladdin

Culinary Union workers and the American Federation of Government Employees picketed outside the Aladdin hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip Monday.

The Culinary was calling attention to its ongoing dispute with the Aladdin while the AFGE was raising awareness of the Bush administration's efforts to privatize some government offices.

The Culinary, which is seeking to represent about 1,500 of the hotel's approximately 2,300 employees, wants authorization to represent employees through a "card count" process of gathering signatures on cards selecting the union as a bargaining agent.

The Aladdin is in the process of being bought out of bankruptcy and the new owners , headed by Robert Earl, co-founder of Planet Hollywood, have said they would retain all Aladdin employees at their existing salary rates. The buyers have not commented on union representation efforts. Representatives of the new management could not be reached for comment today on Monday's union rally.
