$700,000 given to arts groups

The Nevada Arts Council has awarded $739,096 in grants for arts and cultural activities, with $272,623 going to 37 organizations in Clark County, officials said Monday.

The largest grants distributed to Clark County organizations included $25,804 for the Lied Discovery Children's Museum and $20,531 each to KNPR Radio and the Nevada Ballet Theatre. KNPR Radio also received a $20,000 grant but it must secure a 3-1 match to receive the money.

The Las Vegas Philharmonic received $19,451, and Las Vegas Cultural and Community Affairs and the Clark County Cultural Affairs Division each were given $17,073.

Also, $10,720 went to the Nevada School of Arts in Las Vegas and $8,991 to the Nevada Theatre Co.

Mensa selects local secretary

Judy Vasiliauskas of Henderson was named secretary of American Mensa, the national chapter of the high IQ society, last month. This is her second term as secretary. The group meets at Barnes and Noble at 2191 N. Rainbow Blvd. 10 a.m. on Saturdays, 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Putters Bar and Grill, 5025 S. Eastern Ave., and 6 p.m. Fridays at Skinny Dugan's Pub.
