Unions to rally on two issues

Two labor unions will rally to publicize their respective issues today at the Aladdin hotel-casino.

Culinary Workers Union Local 226, which is escalating its campaign to win representation at the Aladdin and the American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO, which is seeking support against President Bush's efforts to privatize some government offices, plan a joint rally at 5 p.m.

The AFGE began its four-day national convention today at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. Speakers this week include John Sweeney, president of the AFL-CIO and Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev.

The Culinary Union sponsored a demonstration led by the Rev. Jesse Jackson on July 23 and promised additional actions if Aladdin's management did not acknowledge the union.

The Nevada Department of Transportation warned motorists on the Strip of possible traffic disruptions on Las Vegas Boulevard at the Aladdin between 4 and 7 p.m.
