Editorial: Back to school — with creative flair

The rote criticism of the Clark County School District is that it's too bureaucratic to think creatively. The critics will need to rethink that line. When school begins Aug. 25, there will be dozens of innovative programs awaiting students. At Liberty High School, there will be students in uniforms and students taking mandatory Latin classes. At Cheyenne, there will be single-sex classrooms available for students at risk of failing math. Some studies have shown this can improve learning. At Walker International Elementary School, where most students speak English only, half the day for kindergartners and first-graders will be given over to studying Spanish. This is just a sampling of the creative ways the district is providing an environment for learning.

Sun reporter Emily Richmond, reporting about the innovations, found students who couldn't wait for school to begin. For this we give the district's "bureaucrats" a lot of credit.
