Two Metro cops in shooting are ID’d

Metro Police have released the names of the two officers involved in a shooting in a Walgreens parking lot Monday that killed ex-Metro officer David Freeman.

The officers are Sgt. Al Cervantes, 47, who has been with Metro for 23 years, and Detective Allen Garris, 50, who has been with the department for 11 years. Both are assigned to the robbery unit.

Both officers will remain on paid leave pending an internal investigation, according to department policy.

The shooting took place after Freeman, a Metro officer from 1995 until May this year, kidnapped Dr. Sheldon Mike in an attempt to get prescription drugs.

Cervantes and Garris fired two shots each at Freeman and Freeman fired one shot at them, Metro officials said.
