Gas cut off to middle school

Mike O'Callaghan Middle School and a home on Radwick Drive near Washington Avenue and Monroe Street were without natural gas service Wednesday night after a construction crew cut a 2-inch line.

A block-long section of Radwick Drive was secured by Metro Police and Las Vegas Fire Department crews after the 9:20 p.m. break in the line occurred as a Las Vegas Valley Water District crew was digging into the street, Southwest Gas Co. spokeswoman Roger Buehrer said.

The gas flow had been sealed off an hour later, allowing the street to reopen, Buehrer said.

Gas delivery was restored overnight.

Brief cooling period expected

Although high temperatures in the 90s may feel like autumn weather to Las Vegas residents after the summer heat, a coming weekend cooling trend won't last long, the National Weather Service said.

Increasing clouds and a chance for thunderstorms on Saturday for extreme Southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona are expected to drop the daytime highs into the mid- to high 90s.

The cooler weather is compliments of a weather system pushing west from Texas into the Southwest.

After Monday the temperatures are expected to rise back into the 100s, with average highs reaching 103 degrees.
