Letter: Democrats’ best chance may be South’s Edwards

Monday, Aug. 11, 2003 | 8:52 a.m.

As my Democratic Party tries to decide what candidate it will select to run against George W. Bush, I believe that person must be able to win in the South. The Democrats' last two presidents, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, were from that region and campaigned strongly there.

With that criteria, we can rule out most of the candidates who, while they may be competent, would simply not be well-received down South. So the Yankee trio of Dean, Lieberman and Kerry, as well as the Rev. Sharpton and former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, could not win in the South.

That leaves Sens. Bob Graham of Florida and John Edwards of North Carolina. While Sen. Graham is a fine man, I believe his Billybob mannerisms would turn much of the rest of the country off.

So, by process of elimination, we come to Edwards. He has been a successful trial lawyer, is scandal free, has presidential demeanor, and would be an appealing alternative to our present bumbling president.

We want a candidate that can win, and I believe that person is John Edwards.
