Letter: Pope’s priorities are misplaced

Friday, Aug. 8, 2003 | 8:40 a.m.

I believe that what we are seeing, once again, is selective morality on the part of President Bush. When Pope John Paul II pleaded with Bush not to invade Iraq, Bush turned a deaf ear. Now, however, with the pontiff's instructions to politicians not to permit the marriage of same-sex partners, Bush, in a move to pick up more votes, has decided to follow the leadership of the pope on the issue.

With all respect and admiration for the pope, I believe he should clean up the mess and purge the church of the sexually abusive priests before instructing politicians to ban same-sex marriages, which hurt no one -- in contrast with the war on Iraq.
