Mountain festival to raise fire awareness
Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003 | 9:01 a.m.
The fifth annual Fire Festival will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Mount Charleston Hotel to raise awareness of fire prevention and safety.
The free event will honor firefighters and military personnel from across the nation who died this year. Clark County Fire Chief Earl Green will be give eulogies, said Pat Vannozzi, chief of the Mount Charleston Fire Rescue, who helped organize the event.
About 5,000 people are expected to attend the event, Vanozzi said. The event raised $12,000 last year with help from corporate sponsors and T-shirts sold at the event.
The money raised goes to the Mount Charleston Volunteer Fire and Rescue to help buy specialized equipment for the volunteers.
Firefighters from across the Las Vegas Valley will be competing to win this year's firefighter championship game.
Clark County Fire Safety House, Nevada Child Seekers, Metro Canine, Metro Search and Rescue will be on hand passing out helpful information.
The event will also include a discussion on wildland fire and what the public should do in fire seasons.
There will be games, prizes and an obstacle course for children, who are encouraged to attend to understand what to do if a fire should occur, Vanozzi said.
