Letter: Explore ideas to help homeless

I read the article and editorial in the Las Vegas Sun about the homeless situation, and I also saw a TV report. There are a lot of families and individuals who are less fortunate out on the streets, along with drifters and drug addicts. No one seems to be looking at the big picture on this issue.

Some organizers of shelters want shelters divided into male and female quarters -- but what about the families? Habitat for Humanity builds homes for one family at a time. Why not get all the agencies to build apartments for these people? Also, provide educational, employment, babysitting and health services when families move in, to get them back on their feet.

Shame on the mayor for dismissing these people. They are living in his back yard and he doesn't want to see them. Where the money would come from is the next question. Money should be available through local agencies and the federal and state governments. And ask people to give of their time and resources. Arouse the enthusiasm of all the churches to help in this cause. Ask the people to help come up with a solution. Advertise through church bulletins and local newspapers to get the attention of the homeless for their input. Broadcast on radio and TV stations.

Prison is not the answer for homeless people. Being homeless and living in fear is their prison.
