City talks with Salvation Army

The Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved a proposal to allow its staff to enter into negotiations to lease the closed Crisis Intervention Center to the Salvation Army so that it can serve as the short-term home for the organization's family services department and other operations.

The Salvation Army wants to use the center for 18 months while construction of the $4 million Lied Vocational Training Center and new dining room is ongoing at its 35 W. Owens Ave. campus. The organization hopes to eventually make the crisis building a permanent home for family services, its year-round Christmas project and additional vocational training classrooms.

The Salvation Army proposes to pay the city $1 a year for the use of the building.

Valet parking to be restricted

The City Council unanimously passed an ordinance that will restrict valet parking at businesses that do not have adequate public parking.

The ordinance will not affect existing valet services at large businesses with adequate parking, such as hotels.

The measure is designed to prevent businesses with limited parking from taking up a high number of spaces with valet parking and not leave enough convenient parking spaces for customers who do not want valet services.

The ordinance requires businesses that want to start valet service to submit a development plan and receive a conditional use approval. One of the restrictions is that a maximum 20 percent of parking spaces be allowed for valet.

Centennial panel members named

The City Council appointed nine people, including three council members, a former U.S. senator and five business leaders, to serve on the Commission for the Las Vegas Centennial.

The board will oversee arrangements for Las Vegas' 100th birthday on March 15, 2005.

Those appointed to the commission are Mayor Oscar Goodman, City Councilmen Gary Reese and Lawrence Weekly, former U.S. Sen. Richard Bryan and local businessmen Ryan Arnold, Hannah Brown, Tim Cashman, Bob Stoldal and Mike Varney.
