Outdoor concert set at Aliante

Bring a picnic basket Saturday to the free courtyard concert between 7 p.m and 10 p.m. at Aliante at the Nature Discovery Park off the Las Vegas Beltway and Aliante Parkway.

The event is sponsored by the North Las Vegas Parks and Recreation Department.

"All That Jazz" will feature music by Zenbop and April Spain. Refreshments will be provided by Alamo Barbeque and The Coffee Bean and Tea Lead and frozen desserts will be available from Snowie.

More concerts are scheduled the rest of the year.

A "Latino Music Celebration" featuring Rick Arroyo and the Latin Rhythm Ensemble and Latin Breeze will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 13 at Hartke Park at 1638 N. Bruce St. in North Las Vegas.

And the "Teen Rock Jam" featuring music by J.D. Simo and Big Bad Zero will be held 4 p.m to 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at Goynes Park at 3903 W. Washburn Road in North Las Vegas.

Back-to-school fair scheduled

A back-to-school fair will be held at Ansan Park on Saturday 10 a.m to 1 p.m. The event is sponsored by Las Vegas Councilwoman Lynette Boggs McDonald, Johnson Middle School and the Las Vegas Housing Authority.

Ansan Park is located on the corner of Ducharme Avenue and Monterey Drive next to the middle school.

The event benefits children who live in housing authority areas and who attend the community schools. Children will receive free backpacks with school supplies. The activities for the day include face painting, games, a free barbeque, a dog show and a fire engine exhibit.

Workshop planned on xeriscaping

Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will host From Lawn to Lush: How to Upgrade Xeriscape, a workshop from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St.

The instructor will discuss how to turn any lawn into xeriscape, which is an approach to landscaping that uses drought-tolerant and water-efficient plants.

The workshop will also explore how to retrofit any spray irrigation system to drip, how to remove grass, which nutrients produce healthier plants when added to soil, and how to choose plants appropriate for the desert climate.

Ostomy group to hold conference

The United Ostomy Association will host its 41st annual UOA conference beginning at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Riviera.

The event will run through Wednesday. UOA is a support group for people who have had or will have reconstructive surgery for bowel or bladder problems.

Registration is $75.
