Green Valley team evens record at 1-1
The Green Valley all-star team scored a 5-2 victory against Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Monday to even its record at 1-1 in pool play at the Little League West Region tournament in San Bernardino, Calif.
Green Valley, which plays again Thursday against Granite Bay/Loomis, Calif., can advance to Sunday's semifinal round with one more victory.
The West Region champion will be crowned next Tuesday with the winner advancing to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.
Seven companies share in the deal, each an extension of an existing contract.
Sharing the contract for the manufacture of outerwear, practice apparel and caps domestically and internationally were Majestic Athletic, New Era Cap, Twins Enterprises, Nike USA, Dynasty Apparel Industries, Drew Pearson International and VF Imagewear.
Agassi breezes
Top-seeded Andre Agassi breezed into the second round of the Tennis Masters Canada tournament in Montreal with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Canadian Frederic Niemeyer. Agassi won this event in 1992, '94 and '95.
Bama linebacker out
Alabama linebacker Brooks Daniels has withdrawn from school and will sit out his senior season for undisclosed medical reasons. Daniels became the first Alabama player to record 100 tackles in consecutive seasons and was a first-team preseason All-Southeastern Conference pick.
Bearcats will wait
The University of Cincinnati will wait until domestic violence and assault charges against basketball player sophomore guard Armein Kirkland are resolved before deciding whether to suspend him from the team. Kirkland, 19, pleaded innocent to charges he struck 17-year-old Ambrea Lacy during an argument Saturday.
Demitra wins case
St. Louis Blues forward Pavol Demitra was awarded the second-largest NHL arbitration payout and will earn $6.5 million next season. John Leclair was awarded $7 million from the Philadelphia Flyers in 2000.
Klitschko on hold
After being cleared to fight by three medical experts, Vitali Klitschko will have to wait at least until next year to have another crack at the heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, who has passed up a lucrative Dec. 6 rematch. Lewis' lawyer, Judd Burnstein, said Monday that Lewis was considering retirement.
