Letter: Gov. Davis is a victim, and target of right-wingers
Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003 | 8:47 a.m.
The beautiful state of California is being assaulted by a few millionaire right-wingers determined to recall and remove from office the popular and twice duly elected Democratic Gov. Gray Davis.
Their feeble excuse is that California has a huge budget deficit. Don't look now, but so are our other 49 states. Our country is suffering the highest budget deficit in U.S. history. It was not Davis, but thieving Enron executives who created the phony electrical crisis in California. The governor was forced to raise taxes to provide education, necessary unemployment insurance and medical care for non-millionaire, working, disabled and retired Californians. And Davis is concerned with the escalating numbers of unemployed homeless citizens.
Republican ultra right-wingers evidently believe that because the 2000 presidential election was contaminated in their favor, that it is now open season on Democrats and other progressive, decent, compassionate and peace-loving Americans.
In their arrogance, conservatives think all they need to do is to have one or more of their billionaires declare a "recall" and confuse the voters. Then our formerly peaceful, prosperous and highly respected country will soon be totally run by selfish, greedy conservatives. If the American people permit this to happen, our country will be in even more peril than that being caused by the warmongering and incompetence of the current un-elected administration.
