Letter: Gilcrease and school should work together
Monday, Aug. 4, 2003 | 8:52 a.m.
I was born and raised in Las Vegas. I am 34 years old with young children ages 5 and 8. I have visited the Gilcrease orchard/animal sanctuary in the northwest and believe that keeping this historic property would be a great asset to the Las Vegas valley and its citizens, especially its children.
Earlier this year the Clark County School District presented plans to build a high school next to the property. The proposed school would have 2,700 to 4,400 students.
I feel it is shameful that the argument used by some people opposed to the school is that the students may cause problems for the Gilcrease property. Problems occur everywhere and in many ways; there is no place on Earth that is immune, be they caused by humans or nature.
The school should be viewed as a great opportunity that is being handed to the orchard. Gilcrease and the school district could create a partnership with the students. Use the resource by educating the students and getting them involved. Give them the hands-on opportunity that they may not get anywhere else in Las Vegas. There may be complications in the beginning, but the outcome would be a winning situation for students, the school district, the teachers, parents, the environment and the Las Vegas Valley as a whole.
Remember, we were teens once as well. We grew and learned from our experiences and mistakes. This experience is an opportunity that should be grabbed and held on to tightly.
