Former teacher indicted in sex case

A former substitute teacher and Boy Scout leader charged with sexually molesting a 12-year-old family member and an 8-year-old family friend was formally indicted on sexual assault and other criminal charges Friday.

An indictment unsealed before District Judge Gene Porter charges Robert Stevenson with two counts of sexual assault, six counts of lewdness and two counts of attempted sexual assault, all with a minor under 14.

Stevenson is being held at the Clark County Detention Center with bail set at $1 million.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Lisa Luzaich told Porter that Stevenson, who moved to Las Vegas from Wisconsin three years ago, could try to leave town if he posted bail.

"Not only is he a danger to the community, but he is also a significant flight risk," she said.

Stevenson, 33, worked at John Bass Elementary School. He does not have defense attorney of record.

Luzaich alleges Stevenson sexually molested a family member on two separate occasions and molested another child when the child had sleepovers with Stevenson's 8-year-old.

Each incident occurred at Stevenson's home and was not related to Boy Scout activities, she said.

The incident with the family friend occurred during a birthday party for Stevenson's son and again after an outing to the movies, Luzaich said.

"This happened on the only two occasions he slept over," she said.

She said Stevenson had many children sleep over at his house but that no other alleged victims had come forward.

"Any phone calls that come in are still being investigated," she said. "But there are no others that I know of."

Stevenson has been dismissed from the Clark County School District. He is scheduled to be arraigned before District Judge Sally Loehrer on Aug. 6
