East Carolina’s Hamrick next in line
Friday, Aug. 1, 2003 | 10:38 a.m.
East Carolina athletic director Mike Hamrick will be the next candidate to interview for UNLV's vacant athletic director's job beginning on Monday.
Hamrick, 46, is the second of three finalists to interview for the job. Montana's Wayne Hogan completed a two-day interview process on Tuesday and Idaho athletic director Mike Bohn is tentatively scheduled for an interview starting on Monday, Aug. 11.
Hamrick, who worked in UNLV's promotion's department in 1981 and 1982, was one of four finalists for the University of Kansas job in 2001 that went to recently fired Al Bohl. Since taking over as athletic director at East Carolina in April 1995 he has been praised for his leadership in Conference-USA and for his fund-raising.
Andy Fry, the chairman of UNLV's athletic director search and selection committee, said he is trying to organize all three interviews to be as identical as possible to give each candidate "an equal opportunity."
UNLV President Dr. Carol Harter will make the final decision and has said she would like to have her new athletic director in place by the time football season opens on Aug. 29.
