Student journalists honored

A Green Valley High School junior won Student Journalist of the Year honors from the CLASS! High School Journalism Awards in a year in which the program added thousands of dollars in scholarships as well as awards for broadcast journalism.

Stephanie Espinoza was named the best student journalist in the contest, which attracted 440 entries from 23 public and private schools throughout Clark County. The awards were to be presented today at the Clark County Library Theater by CLASS! Publications, a nonprofit monthly publication for, by and about local high school students.

Along with the Student of the Year honors, Espinoza won a $500 scholarship. Seven other students were given scholarships: Ivete Aldaba of Clark won the $10,000 Sandy Thompson Memorial Award, donated by the Greenspun Corp., owned by the Greenspun family, who publish the Las Vegas Sun.

Vaneh Movsessian of Palo Verde and Leah Paraso of Community College North received the $4,000 MGM MIRAGE Diversity Awards. Paula Rigoli of Coronado won the $2,000 CLASS! Founders Award. Marites Velasquez of Las Vegas Academy and Lina Hernandez of Las Vegas High won the $500 MGM MIRAGE Achievement Awards. Susan Dons of Cheyenne received the $500 MGM MIRAGE Merit Award.

The Vo-Tech broadcast news team won the first award for Broadcast News.

The establishment of the awards "is an indication of how broadcasting as an area of study may grow in the future, if the funding is there to let it happen," Maureen McDonough, assistant director of CLASS! Publications, said.
