Bill paves way for Metro bond issues

CARSON CITY -- The Assembly unanimously approved a bill Tuesday that allows Metro Police to save time in putting a bond issue before voters.
Senate Bill 334, which passed the Assembly 41-0 with Ron Knecht, R-Carson City, absent, allows Metro to seek approval from its local governing bodies to put an issue on the ballot. Legislative approval is required before a bond issue question is requested, and if a measure weren't passed in this Legislature, it would take another two years to get that permission.
Metro will still must get approval for the ballot measure from Metro's Fiscal Affairs Board, the Las Vegas City Council and the Clark County Commission, in addition to the local Debt Management Agency.
The question must seek bond money for the hiring of new police officers and related expenses.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Warren Hardy, R-Henderson, now goes to Gov. Kenny Guinn. The measure will take effect upon Guinn's signature.
