Rape suspect holds off police in 6-hour standoff

Tuesday, April 29, 2003 | 9:41 a.m.

Pepper spray blew through a Henderson neighborhood this morning as police ended an almost six-hour standoff with a rape suspect.

Police had surrounded the home of 38-year-old Daniel Myrick in the 100 block of Metropolitan Drive about 3 a.m. to try to arrest him, but Myrick apparently barricaded himself in the house, Officer Shane Lewis, Henderson Police spokesman, said.

Police believed he might be armed, Lewis said.

"We don't believe that there are any other people in the house," Lewis said during the standoff. "I think that ultimately he just doesn't want to go back to jail."

Myrick allegedly beat and raped a woman in March at the home and allegedly had used a weapon in that case. He was arrested April 15 in Arizona and was extradited to Nevada, but once here he was able to bail out of jail, Lewis said.

At about 1 a.m., Myrick began bothering his alleged victim at a convenience store where she works, Lewis said.

Myrick's bail was revoked and police went to his home to arrest him. About 8:45 this morning police took Myrick into custody after firing pepper spray into his home.
