Letter: Woods should stop pontificating

The author of a recent letter to the editor indicated that he was impressed with pro golfer Tiger Woods' intellect. The basis for his impression was an article Woods wrote for the far right-wing National Review. In that article, the callow (and coddled) golfer spouted such mindless banalities as, "Obviously, no one likes war" and "I like the assertiveness shown by President Bush and think we owe it to our political and military leaders, along with the brave soldiers, to be as supportive as possible during these difficult and trying times ..."
First, there are some people who do like war and are assertive as long as they're not the ones "in the trenches." Second, support for our service men and women does not equate to support for the policy decision to go to war. Our military people are only an instrument of policy. Though they're the ones who sacrifice, they're not the ones who decide whether or not to go to war.
My advice to Tiger: Cease the geopolitical pontificating. You just don't have the intellect. Instead, press on piling up millions, driving fancy cars and eating fine cuisine during these "difficult and trying times."
