The UNLV men's tennis team was beaten 4-1 by BYU in the first round Thursday of the Mountain West Conference Championship in Provo, Utah.
UNLV will close its season by facing Utah in today's consolation match for fifth place after the Utes fell to Air Force 4-3 in the first round. BYU will take on second-seeded New Mexico, which enjoyed a first-round bye.
Also, two Rebels earn All-Mountain West Conference honors. Sophomore Aviram Salomon, who was last season's MWC freshman of the year, was named to the all-conference team after turning in a 7-1 record at the No. 3 singles spot. Freshman Henner Nehles, who did not join the program until January, was included after compiling a 6-5 overall record, mainly at the top position.
The top-seeded Lady Rebels (16-4) move into a rematch with BYU in one of today's semifinals. The Cougars knocked the Lady Rebels out of the top 25 with a 6-1 upset on April 5.
Also, three UNLV players made the All-Mountain West Conference team. Senior Paulina Janus became only the second player in program history to be named first team all-league three times in a career. Another repeater was sophomore Gyorgyi Zsiros. Rounding out the trio was sophomore Tracie Chong. b
